Jim McCartney

He started and operated for 10 years an independent marketing company and is Chair of the Board of EIG Ltd. — serious business experience.

Jim has mediated or arbitrated more than 2,000 disputes involving commercial, industrial, public and residential construction, professional negligence, franchising, employment, debt, insurance (including fatality and severe injury) corporate and shareholder issues, royalties, trusts, market rent, industrial land sales, government contracts, fires, pipelines, competing petroleum and coal exploration and development rights, environmental monitoring agreements, and other matters.

He is a Chartered Mediator, Chartered Arbitrator, and Chartered Med-Arb, Past President of the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society (now ADR Institute of Alberta), and former Director and Vice President of the ADR Institute of Canada. He is or has been on the mediation rosters of the Provincial and Queen’s Bench courts, the General Insurance OmbudService, the Alberta Land Surveyors Association, and the Energy Resources Conservation Board and the arbitration rosters of the Canadian Transportation Agency, the Better Business Bureau, ICDR, and the Alberta New Home Warranty Program, and Chair of three NEB Pipeline Arbitration Committees.

Appointments have included four terms on the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta discipline and appeal tribunals and sanction agreement panels and to the Bid Protest Panel pursuant to the Alberta Agreement on Internal Trade. He has been a member of an oilsands royalty dispute review committee and recently chaired a second committee. Both appointments were by the Minister of Energy.

He is a frequent presenter to lawyers, students, and others on arbitration, mediation, and negotiation.
